Our Own Bob Shepard Named “Top Insurance Agent” by IIAT
One of the state’s highest honors in the independent insurance industry was bestowed on Shepard Walton King Insurance Group’s very own Bob Shepard. He was presented with the Drex Foreman Award at the Independent Insurance Agents of Texas’s (IIAT) 119th Annual Conference and Trade Show in San Antonio. The annual honor is given to the greatest contributor of the independent agency system for the year and is named after Drex Foreman, who served as IIAT’s Chief Executive Director for over 30 years.
An Impressive Career
Climbing to the top didn’t happen overnight for Mr. Shepard. A University of Texas graduate, Mr. Shepard has been active in the insurance industry for over 40 years. In the late 1980s, he was elected to the State Republican Executive Committee where he pioneered for the State of Texas’s Republican Party. His hard work and dedication has been recognized by two Texas Governors, both of whom appointed him to serve on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Mr. Shepard was first selected by Governor George W. bush in 1996, and was re-appointed by Governor Rick Perry in 2005.
He is currently a longtime member of the IIAT and is also a past board member and president of the IIAT and IIAT Services Boards, respectively. Besides serving on IIAT’s Legislative committee, Mr. Shepard was also a member of the Board of Directors for the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association, or TWIA, and currently holds the position of chairman for the IIAT IMPACT Board of Trustees. He has served as Chairman and President of the College for all Texans Foundation, former president of the University of Texas at Brownsville Development Board and former chairman of the Board of Regents of Pan American University in Edinburg.
A Pillar of the Community
In addition to his professional life, Mr. Shepard has consistently kept a strong commitment to the Rio Grande Valley. He has served on the boards of the Harlingen Industrial Foundation, Valley Partnership, Salvation Army and Texas Lyceum. He is also the former Chairman of the Harlingen Area Chamber of Commerce and a former president of the Harlingen Economic Development Board.
Praise from His Peers
IIAT Governmental Affairs Director Lee Loftis expressed his admiration for Mr. Shepard and the work he has done. “Bob has been and continues to be a true servant leader to our industry, his community and business in Texas for over forty years. In his career, he has become an influential voice at the Capital. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of the Drex Foreman Award.”
