Distracted Driving: What it is and Why Shepard Walton King Cares
Did you know that every day, at least nine Americans die and 100 are injured in distracted driving crashes? With these alarming numbers, it’s important to know that April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
This special designation helps drivers become educated on the dangers of using electronic devices while behind the wheel along with learning what can be done to prevent it. Even though the month of April is almost over, it’s never too late to discuss this very serious topic.
What is Distracted Driving?
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving is any activity that takes a driver’s attention away from the road. This can include talking or texting on smartphones/handheld devices, eating and/or drinking, or adjusting a stereo or navigation system.
On average, typing out a text can take your eyes off the road for at least five seconds. That may not sound like a lot, but texting and driving at 55 mph, for example, is similar to driving the length of a football field with your eyes closed.
There are 47 states, including Texas, that have passed laws prohibiting texting and driving. Texas has also banned talking and driving on handheld devices while in school zones and prevents bus drivers and drivers under 18 from using handheld phones while driving. First-time texting and driving offenders could be fined up to $99 and repeat offenses could cost a driver up to $200 dollars.
The easiest way to prevent distracted driving is to put your devices down or pull over to a safe spot, park, and then use a device, but only if it’s an emergency. Spreading the word of the dangers of distracted driving can also help, whether it’s at your workplace or among family and friends. Teens can sign pledges to never drive distractedly, and everyone can help share the message on social media about the dangers of distracted driving.
