Easy Riding: Motorcycle Road Trip Safety Tips
Two wheels and miles of road can define freedom for a lot of people. Crossing the country on your motorcycle is one of the most freeing experiences one can have. It’s different than a car; you are closer to the world around you and it’s extremely relaxing.
It’s important to keep a few more things in mind while on the road, both for your safety and enjoyment. Before hitting the road, here are a few tips to get the most out of your trip.
You have considerably less space to work with when it comes to carrying gear on your bike. When packing for your trip, focus on the essentials or face overloading yourself and your bike. Things like your phone and its charger, a good map, clothes and a multi-tool will serve you a lot better than you think.
This is easy to forget but can save you major pain along the way. Riding your bike long distances can be a special kind of punishment on your body if you don’t take breaks. Be sure to make time to stop and stretch whenever possible. Also, sit in a comfortable position on your bike and your body will thank you.
The road is a noisy place, especially when you’re speeding along at 60 mph with the wind in your face. A good and inexpensive pair of earplugs will cut down on the noise and can actually make you more alert of your surroundings. When your brain doesn’t have to work overtime to cut through the blaring wind, focus more on the road and hear any mechanical problems that may come up.
Eat Light and Sleep Early
Being extra alert while riding and eating right during your trip play big roles. Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated and save the big meals for dinner at the end of your riding day or else you’ll be fighting off a food coma instead of focusing on the road. When it’s time to rest, head to bed sooner and get on the road early. You’ll make the most of your trip travelling by daylight, and watching the world wake up while on your bike is quite an experience.
