The Importance of Protecting Yourself Against Uninsured Motorists
Most of us would like to believe that we’re safe drivers. We take extra precautions and follow the rules of the road to prevent accidents or other incidents. Although you can be fully in control of your own vehicle and speed, it’s impossible to control the actions of other drivers. Finding yourself in an accident where someone else was at fault can be frightening, overwhelming and upsetting. Thoughts about how you’ll handle your vehicle’s repairs or medical bills (if injuries occurred) are enough to make anyone worry. This can be even worse if the other driver was uninsured. In this piece, we’ll be looking at why it’s important to have coverage in the case of suffering an accident caused by uninsured motorists.
The First Step
The first step you can take to protect yourself from an uninsured motorist is to purchase auto insurance for your vehicle. By speaking with a member of our team, you’ll be on the right path toward finding the best possible insurance policy. Keep in mind, though, that there are different types of policies for different situations. And while insurance coverages vary, there are also many stipulations that go into each one.
For example, if you purchase liability insurance, be aware that it comes with the “30/60/25” clause. This means that the policy can cover up to $30,000 in bodily injuries for each person, pay $60,000 for bodily injuries in total for the accident and pay for $25,000 in property damages. However, this is just basic coverage.
Consider Uninsured Motorist Coverage
Like the name suggests, uninsured motorist coverage will protect you from drivers who lack their own insurance policies. Keep in mind that many states don’t require drivers to own uninsured motorist coverage, but it isn’t wise to overlook this type of policy. It covers both bodily harm (bodily injuries) and damages to your vehicle. Most of these policies cover yourself and your passengers and can even protect you if you aren’t the driver.
Documentation is Key
Say the unfortunate happens and you find yourself the victim in an accident with an uninsured driver. What then? First, if there are no injuries to yourself or your passengers, never neglect to contact police or emergency services. While waiting for law enforcement to arrive, be sure to document the damages done to your vehicle or property. This includes recording the time of the accident and photographing dents, broken windows, etc. with your mobile phone.
If it’s safe, walk around to see if other damages have occurred to other motorists. Get the names of witnesses (if any) and be sure to provide this information to police once they arrive. And last but certainly not least, be sure to ask for a copy of the police report after one has been made for your own records and to provide your attorney with.
Contact Your Insurer and Hire an Attorney
After a police report has been obtained and your records/evidence are in order, contact your insurer to inform them of what happened. Provide as many details as possible. This will allow your insurer to write up a report of the incident. Be sure to also include the police report. This will prove that you were not at fault in the accident. Along with your uninsured motorist coverage and the police report, you can rest assured that the repairs for damages to your vehicle or private property will be taken care of. Next, contact an attorney who can help you with your situation. As with your insurer, provide your attorney with your records of the accident to help build your case.
Going the Extra Mile
Shepard Walton King’s Rafaela Moreno recently spoke about the importance of purchasing vehicle insurance. “When a customer walks in and purchases insurance, we explain all of their options to them on coverages and what each means. I always recommend that clients obtain uninsured motorist coverage. It provides more coverage than a simple liability policy.”
