Historically, hurricane season has had devastating effects on cities and towns along the east coast and the Gulf of Mexico for generations. Specifically, the Texas coastline has had its fair share of hurricane strikes and close calls. Most recently, Hurricane Hanna left the southern region with damages and without power. Our McAllen insurance agents know just how rough it can be to handle a storm like a hurricane. We’d like to offer some steps to help you prepare. Read on to learn more.
Know How to Evacuate
Unfortunately, despite the amount of time spent tracking storms, sometimes the worst of the damage can happen at unforeseen times. It’s the reason why it’s so important that you identify evacuation routes in your area. If there are too many to memorize, then make note of the best one on your phone.
Know Your Nearby Shelters
If you feel like the storm nearing your area is just too dangerous to brave at home, then it’s your responsibility to get your family to the nearest shelter. As soon as shelter locations are announced, make sure your family is prepared to make it to one. Be sure to take a few things with you to make your stay as comfortable as possible. You can call the shelter ahead of time and ask what they’ll allow you to bring.
Protect Your Home
There’s a chance you’ll want to remain at home during the storm. If that’s the case, then it’s important to take the necessary steps to protect it. We’re talking about boarding up your windows with plywood and sealing any doorways or lower areas with sandbags. Remember, if there are items outside like potted plants, lawn furniture, etc., then make sure it’s all stored away or tied down to prevent debris from flying about.
Emergency Kits Are a Must
It’s a good idea to keep an emergency kit ready, even outside of hurricane season. If you don’t have one, prepare one with rubbing alcohol, bandages, and any other first aid items you can think of. You can even equip it with extra phone chargers, batteries, and flashlights.
Protect Your Home with Insurance
At Shepard Walton King, we know that a storm’s devastation can leave you feeling helpless and unsure of how to move forward. That’s why it’s so important to protect your property with comprehensive home insurance. If you aren’t sure where to start, then reach out to our McAllen insurance agents today for more information.
