Historically, hurricane season has had devastating effects on cities and towns across the nation, and the Texas coastline is no exception. This destructive season begins on June 1st, meaning that it’s time to consider a few things to ensure that you, your family, and your property remain safe. Our McAllen insurance agents know just how much damage one of these storms can cause. This is why we want to offer a few steps to help you prepare.
Know How to Exit
Unfortunately, despite the number of days that storms are tracked for and their possible effects are being evaluated, the worst damage can happen at unforeseen times. It’s the reason why it’s so important that you identify the evacuation routes of your area. If there are many options, keep them noted on your phone and be sure to share them with your family and friends. As soon as you get the go-ahead by your local or state government to evacuate, don’t linger or stall. Pack up a few days’ worth of clothing and supplies and head out.
Know Your Shelters
If you feel that the storm nearing your town is just too dangerous to brave at home, then it’s your responsibility to get your family to the nearest storm shelter. As soon as shelter locations are announced, make sure your family is prepared to make it to one. You can rest assured that plenty will be available and will allow families of many sizes to stay.
Protect Your Home
There’s a chance you’ll want to remain at your own home during the storm to ensure that everything remains safe. If so, it’s important to take the necessary steps to protect it. We’re talking about boarding up windows with plywood and sealing any doorways or lower areas with sandbags. Fortunately, many cities announce locations to pick up sandbags, so tune in to your local news. Also, make sure to brace down or store lawn furniture and other items away if possible.
Emergency Kits Are a Must
It’s a good idea to keep an emergency kit handy. If you don’t already have one, many big-name retailers sell them at good prices. If you’d prefer to put one together yourself, make sure it includes rubbing alcohol, bandages, and any other first aid items you can think of. Do some research online to figure out what it is that you need. You can even equip it with extra phone chargers, flashlights, and batteries for an extra level of preparedness.
