The 5 Steps to Follow When Filing an Auto Insurance Claim
Each day, millions of cars crowd our nation’s streets and increase the possibility of a car accident. While the advice to follow is to drive with extreme safety, sometimes accidents are inevitable or unavoidable. What should you do in the event of a car crash? Whether your wreck is severe or a minor fender bender, it’s important to file an insurance claim that will help you get through any possibly stressful times ahead. After an accident, you should always remain calm and follow our five steps to filing an auto insurance claim.
Call Emergency Services
If the accident you were involved in has caused injury, call 911 for fast medical treatment. However, if no injury has been sustained, you can directly call police to have an officer provide you with the necessary accident report.
You don’t want to leave the scene of the accident without any of the other party’s information. It’s very important to ask for their license plate numbers, contact information and insurance information so that you may refer it to your insurance company.
A Witness is Important
Under certain circumstances – damage appears to be less than $500 or the accident occurred in a parking lot – a police officer may refuse to file a report. It is strongly advised to get information in writing from witnesses who are willing to give you a backup source of evidence. Additional sources of information can include security officers or passersby.
Contact Your Insurance Carrier
It’s important to call your insurance company as soon as possible. Doing so can ensure a faster process from your own carrier than from the other party’s company. Your coverage plan will eventually determine how much help you will receive from each carrier, but keep in mind if you don’t have collision coverage and the other party has no insurance, you may have to take your case to court.
Prepare for the Other Carrier’s Phone Call
It’s very likely that you will receive a phone call from the other party’s insurance company, so it’s very important to prepare for it. You will have to retell the events as they happened according to you and it’s strongly advised to write everything you’ll say down so the information is clear, concise and consistent.
