Recently, parts of northern Texas were hit hard with severe weather, and last week, a tragic accident occurred at a Dallas apartment complex. High winds from a thunderstorm sent a construction crane crashing into the building and left one dead and five others injured.
The building itself sustained damage in several areas, and in many other parts of the city, hundreds were left without electricity. Accidents like this are rare but remind us all that if you’re renting your home, it’s always best to have a renters insurance policy.
Coverage When You Need it
A renters insurance policy, as the name suggests, covers any sort of residential rental property. This policy can cover expenses such as personal liability, medical payments, and can even protect a tenant in the event someone suffers an injury at their home.
In the case of the unfortunate event in Dallas, a renters insurance policy would have been very helpful for a tenant who would’ve had to deal with damaged or destroyed belongings. Since some of the damaged apartments were left uninhabitable, a renters policy would cover the expenses from a relocation.
From the Experts
Vice President of Shepard Walton King, Chris Graham, spoke about the accident in Dallas and renters insurance in general.
“That was a very unfortunate incident and we hope everyone is okay, but it stresses the need for renters insurance. Falling cranes are not everyday occurrences, but having a renters insurance policy would benefit these leaseholders by helping them with medical bills, reimbursing them for their belongings, and covering relocation expenses if needed.”
