Motorcycle Riding: A Few Important Facts and Statistics You Should Know
May is Motorcycle Awareness Month, and now is the time to appreciate and remember just how dangerous motorcycle riding can be. These vehicles, faster than your average car, are extremely susceptible to damage. And motorcycle riders are much more likely to suffer serious injuries due to the fact that they aren’t encased within a reinforced vehicle like your average driver.
Our insurance agency in McAllen would like to go over a few very important facts and statistics about motorcycles and why it’s important to have necessary insurance coverage for them. Read on to learn more.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcycle deaths are 28 times more likely to occur than fatalities in other vehicles. Here are a few other alarming stats:
- In 2017, there were over 5,100 motorcycle riders who perished on U.S. roads.
- In Texas, 417 riders lost their lives and 920 were seriously injured in accidents on Texas roads.
- Only 65% of people on motorcycles use DOT-compliant helmets.
In 2018, there was reportedly at least one motorcyclist who died and two injured on Texas highways and roads each day. More than half of all motorcycle accidents are the result of wrecks with other vehicles.
Other drivers simply do not see motorcyclists on the road or overestimate the distance and speed of a biker. The size and speed of a motorcycle can mislead drivers into thinking they are further away. Weather and road conditions can also be factors in many motorcycle accidents.
What You Can Do
- Keep an extra lookout for motorcyclists on the road, especially at intersections.
- Always assume that motorcycles are closer than they appear.
- Always use turn signals and check your blind spots before changing lanes if a motorcycle is behind you.
- Do not follow a motorcycle too closely.
- Obey all posted speed limits.
Get Covered Today
The facts presented above can be scary for those unfamiliar with motorcycle riding. If you happen to own a motorcycle, then you know how much fun they can be, but always be cautious. Before going on your next ride, make sure to have insurance coverage.
